Collagen for Dogs: Benefits, Types & What You Need

By Grazyna, Founder of North Hound Life · Last updated October 2026

The short answer

Yes, collagen is safe and useful for most dogs. It's the main structural protein in joints, skin, tendons and bones. There are two very different kinds of collagen supplement. Hydrolyzed collagen peptides are given in gram amounts as building blocks for joints, skin, coat and muscle. Undenatured type II collagen (UC-II®) is given in tiny milligram amounts and works through the gut's immune tissue to support joint cartilage. They aren't interchangeable, so choose by your dog's goal and give it daily for at least 4 to 8 weeks.

Two collagens, two jobs:

  • Pure Collagen: 100% hydrolyzed collagen peptides from grass-fed cows, for everyday joint, skin, coat and muscle support.
  • Hip & Joint Elite+: UC-II® undenatured type II collagen with collagen peptides, Boswellia, hyaluronic acid and vitamin C, for dogs who need more joint support.

What is collagen?

Collagen is the most abundant protein in your dog's body. It forms the framework of cartilage, skin, tendons, ligaments, bones and the lining of the gut. Your dog makes their own collagen from the protein they eat, but the body's own production tends to slow with age. That's one reason collagen supplements are popular for senior and very active dogs.

Collagen is especially rich in the amino acids glycine, proline and hydroxyproline, which the body uses to build and maintain connective tissue.

Collagen peptides vs UC-II: the difference that matters

Most articles list collagen "types I, II and III" and stop there. For dogs, what matters more is how the collagen is processed, because that changes how it works and how much you give.

Hydrolyzed collagen peptides Undenatured type II collagen (UC-II®)
How it's made Collagen broken into small peptides that are easy to absorb Collagen kept in its native, unbroken shape
Usual source Bovine (cow) or marine (fish) Chicken cartilage
How it works Supplies the amino acids and peptides used to build and maintain connective tissue Interacts with immune tissue in the gut ("oral tolerance") to support healthy joint cartilage
Amount Hundreds of milligrams to grams a day Tiny: tens of milligrams a day
Best for Everyday joint, skin, coat and muscle support Targeted joint and mobility support
Our product Pure Collagen Hip & Joint Elite+

Because they work in different ways, more of one doesn't replace the other. A big scoop of collagen peptides won't do what UC-II does, and UC-II's tiny dose isn't meant to supply building blocks.

What does collagen do for dogs?

  • Joints and mobility: supports healthy cartilage and comfortable movement, especially for seniors, large breeds and active dogs.
  • Skin and coat: supports skin structure and elasticity and a healthy-looking coat.
  • Bones and muscle: helps maintain bone and muscle, which matters more as dogs age.
  • Gut lining: collagen's glycine-rich protein supports a healthy digestive tract lining.

What the research says

UC-II: in a randomized study of 60 dogs with joint stiffness, dogs given UC-II for 30 days showed improvements in owner-scored mobility similar to dogs given a standard veterinary medication. The medication performed better in the more severe cases, and the study had no placebo group (Stabile et al., 2019).

Collagen peptides: in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, dogs with joint stiffness given specific bioactive collagen peptides for 12 weeks showed improved gait and quality of life compared with placebo (PLOS One, 2024).

The research is promising but still growing, and results depend on the specific form and dose used. That's why we use studied forms and give clear daily amounts.

Which collagen is right for my dog?

Your dog Good fit
Healthy adult, active or sporty, or you're focused on skin and coat Pure Collagen
Hesitating on stairs, slow to get up, lagging on walks Hip & Joint Elite+ (already includes collagen peptides)

21 to 30 lbs 3/8 tsp 860 mg
31 to 40 lbs 1/2 tsp 1,150 mg
41 to 50 lbs 5/8 tsp 1,440 mg
51 to 60 lbs 3/4 tsp 1,725 mg
61 to 70 lbs 7/8 tsp 2,010 mg
71 to 80 lbs 1 tsp 2,300 mg
Over 80 lbs 1 1/8 tsp 2,590 mg

Intermittent or supplemental feeding only. Do not use in pregnant or lactating animals.

Hip & Joint Elite+

Give once a day, sprinkled on or mixed into food. One teaspoon is 2,000 mg, and every gram contains 20 mg of UC-II®.

Dog's weight Daily amount
Up to 20 lbs 1/4 tsp (500 mg)
21 to 40 lbs 1/2 tsp (1,000 mg)
41 to 70 lbs 3/4 tsp (1,500 mg)
71 lbs and over 1 tsp (2,000 mg)

For intermittent or supplemental use only. Do not use in pregnant or lactating animals. Do not use in animals with liver or lung disease unless directed by a veterinarian. Introduce gradually.

How long does collagen take to work in dogs?

Collagen is daily, long-term support, not a quick fix. Plan on at least 4 to 8 weeks of consistent use before judging how your dog is moving. Changes in skin and coat often take a little longer, since coat grows slowly.

Can dogs get collagen from food?

Yes. Collagen-rich foods include:

  • Bone broth, homemade with no onion, garlic or added salt.
  • Natural chews like beef trachea, chicken feet and fish skins. Always supervise chewing.

Food sources vary a lot in how much collagen they actually provide, and they're easy to overdo on calories. A supplement gives you a consistent, measured amount every day.

Is collagen safe for dogs?

Collagen is a natural protein and is very well tolerated. A few things to know:

  • Protein sensitivities: match the source to your dog. Pure Collagen comes from cows, and UC-II comes from chicken cartilage.
  • Mild tummy changes can happen in the first week or two. Introduce gradually.
  • Check with your vet first if your dog is pregnant or nursing, is a puppy, takes medication or has a health condition. Elite+ isn't for dogs with liver or lung disease unless your vet directs it.

Why we make our collagen the way we do

  • Pure Collagen is a single ingredient: hydrolyzed collagen peptides from grass-fed cows, about 90% protein, with no inactive ingredients. It's registered with Health Canada (NN.F7A3) and comes in a recyclable glass jar.
  • Hip & Joint Elite+ is 100% active ingredients, with no fillers or flow agents. It combines UC-II® at 20 mg per gram, hydrolyzed type I collagen, Boswellia serrata extract (65% boswellic acids), hyaluronic acid and vitamin C, which the body uses to make its own collagen. We were the first Canadian company to offer UC-II collagen for dogs. It's registered with Health Canada (NN.W3Y0).

Frequently asked questions

Is collagen good for dogs?

Yes. Collagen is the main structural protein in joints, skin, tendons and bones. Collagen peptides support everyday joint, skin, coat and muscle health, and undenatured type II collagen (UC-II) supports joint cartilage and mobility.

What's the difference between collagen peptides and UC-II for dogs?

Collagen peptides are broken down for easy absorption and given in gram amounts as building blocks. UC-II is undenatured type II collagen given in tiny milligram amounts, and it works through the gut's immune tissue to support joint cartilage. They work differently and aren't interchangeable.

How much collagen should I give a 50 lb dog?

For Pure Collagen, a 41 to 50 lb dog gets 5/8 teaspoon a day, about 1,440 mg. For Hip & Joint Elite+, a 41 to 70 lb dog gets 3/4 teaspoon (1,500 mg) once a day.

How long does collagen take to work in dogs?

Plan on at least 4 to 8 weeks of consistent daily use for joints. Skin and coat changes often take a little longer.

Can I give my dog human collagen?

Plain, unflavoured collagen peptides are generally fine, but many human products contain sweeteners like xylitol (toxic to dogs), flavours or other added ingredients. Dosing is also designed for people. A dog-specific product with a weight-based dose is the safer choice.

Can I give collagen with green-lipped mussel?

Yes. They support joints in different ways. We recommend Hip & Joint Elite+ and Hip & Joint Health together for complete joint support.
