Got Goat Milk?

Goats' milk has long been added to dog's food bowls and it is becoming more popular in North American grocery stores.  Goat milk is actually the most consumed milk in the world with evidence showing it's been enjoyed for millenia.  Goats’ milk is one of the earliest known superfoods.  And, superfoods are good for you and your dog.

Goat milk has a lot of health benefits and is easier digested than cow's milk and lacks the complex proteins that are often associated with allergies.  This is one of the reasons why pet parents turn to goat milk due to it's ease of digestibility in dogs. It contains vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, trace elements, enzymes, protein and fatty acids. It helps with dogs with sensitive GI tracts.

One of the superfood features is that is is high in linoleic acid, which has been recognized as having antioxidative and anticarcinogenic properties. Also, goats' milk is high in caprylic acid, a yeast fighting fat. Along with helping your dog with the following chronic diseases:

  • Liver disease
  • Heavy metal poisoning
  • Malnutrition
  • Kidney disease
  • Kidney stones
  • Diabetes
  • GI disease
  • Poor digestion
  • Diarrhea

Fermenting goats' milk creates probiotics and you can find this as yogurt or kefir. Freezing yogurt and kefir destroys a lot of the probiotics, but there are still some traces of probiotics that are able to survive. Adding a probiotic in a powder form, your dog is able to absorb the active probiotics to help them thrive. As Dr. Karen Becker writes:

"Probiotics are friendly strains of bacteria that maintain healthy levels of good bacteria in your pet’s GI tract, and also defend against opportunistic, potentially pathogenic bacteria...When your pet’s bacteria are in balance with the right amount and type of healthy bugs on board, there is symbiosis. Good things happen inside your pet’s body. "

In Canada, you can not buy raw goats milk, unless you have a farmer who gives you raw goats milk, you legally can not purchase it.  Many products on the market today are sold frozen as "raw goats milk", but this is in fact goat milk kefir, not "raw goats milk".

When you start adding this superfood to your dog's bowl, you should also consider the source. The nutritional value of goat milk does depend on the diet and overall health of the animals that are producing it. Goats that are pastured and grass fed in a low stress environment, free of antibiotics and free of GMO feeds will produce far better quality milk.

You should try some goats' milk!
